What would you tell your younger self?

For those things that I stated, “Someday, I am going to…”, I would have started on them much sooner. Many of those things would have been easier to accomplish in my younger years than in my 70’s. I would have spent more of that time with my family. I would do more kind and generous projects and programs that change the lives of others.

In retrospect, would you change your path?

I would have started my college education earlier and pursued my Air Force career as a fighter pilot. I had a great Air Force career as an enlisted airman; however, my preference would have been to “fly and fight.”

What practical business advice do you have for young business owners and operators in Central Alabama?

My advice for employees would be to demonstrate a strong work ethic for those you work for and give more than they expect. Never be embarrassed to get your paycheck; be proud that you earned it. My advice to employers would be to treat your employees like you wanted to be treated when you were one of them. Challenge them and hold them accountable, then reward them when they do well. After you succeed in business, give back to your community and those needing help. Finally, I would say, develop trust and respect from your employees so they’ll do a good job for you, even when you’re away.

What are your proudest achievements?

I am proud of my beautiful family, and especially my wife who was there raising our family when I was working three jobs at once. I am proud of three different milestones in my life: Becoming an Eagle Scout at age 12, being selected as Commandant of the U.S. Air Force Senior NCO Academy, and being appointed Vice Chancellor of Troy University’s Montgomery Campus.

What pivotal moments or decisions played a role in your success?

I’m very honored to have worked for three great leaders: my scout leader, Otis Fall, Jr.; former Vietnam POW, General Charles G. “Chuck” Boyd (former Air University Commander) and Troy University Chancellor Jack Hawkins, Jr. All three taught me many great leadership traits.

If You Could Have Dinner with Anyone (Dead or Alive) Who Would It Be and Why?

Jesus Christ. I would like to thank Him face-to-face for what He did. I would also like to know who and what existed before the beginning.
