Montgomery-based Program Management and Technology Services, Incorporated (PMTS Inc.) offers a wide range of IT services. According to Ken Tuck, the founder’s son and current COO, the company’s ability to provide tailored solutions and support to a diverse array of businesses and organizations is key to its success, but not the only factor.
He points to his company’s character. “We endeavor to drive continual improvement and innovation based on efficient business processes, well-defined measurements, industry best practices and customer feedback,” he said. “Our values are integrity-based, and our goal is to create a culture of collaboration, mutual respect and trust.”
To the Point: Open and honest communication, setting clear expectations and maintaining professionalism are key to hopping over hurdles that can arise when working with family. “Regularly assess and adjust strategies as the business evolves and be prepared to seek external guidance when needed,” said Ken Tuck, PMTS Inc.’s COO. “Regular family meetings also provide a dedicated space to address concerns, share feedback and make collective decisions.”
Meet the Family:
PMTS Inc. has four family members in the corporate office who are involved in the day to-day operation of the business. From left to right: Director of HR: Tiffany Andrews; Vice President of Operations: Kelly Tuck; COO: Ken Tuck; CEO: Ruby Tuck.
Family Values
Creating and exemplifying this company character was a motivating force for Ken’s mom, PMTS’ CEO Ruby Tuck, when she founded the company in 2013. “She was a government employee for over 34 years. She decided to establish PMTS to help improve program management and software development services being offered to the government and to create a legacy that would continue for generations,” Ken said.
Ken followed his mom into the IT world, working 15 years as an IT Solutions Architect with Cox Communications, before coming to PMTS in 2018. Soon, other relatives came onboard. Ruby’s niece, Tiffany Andrews, joined the team in 2019, and Ken’s brother, Kelly, rounded out the roster in 2022, leaving a 14-year civil service career as a Computer Specialist/Functional Manager with the Department of Defense.
Relationship Rewards
Ken says trust and a familiarity with strengths and weaknesses are the significant advantages to working with family in a business. Family ties also lead to increased investment in the business’ future. “We have a shared commitment to the success of the business. This fosters a cohesive team that works toward a collective goal.” The perks go beyond the business’ bottom line; Ken points to strengthened bonds as the pay-off he finds fulfilling. “Working with family members fosters a sense of camaraderie because of the shared experiences that we would not have otherwise,” he said.
Obstacles to Overcome
Challenges of family members doubling as co-workers include friendly dinner conversations switching to business-strategy debates. “Suddenly, the dining table becomes the conference table,” Ken said. “We have to ensure that business talk doesn’t take over our precious family time.” And when shop talk is appropriate, conducting it correctly is crucial. “Disagreements are normal, but can be more complicated when family is involved,” Ken said.
His advice: Establish open lines of communication and encourage honest, respectful dialogue. “We have implemented conflict resolution strategies, such as active listening, seeking compromise and involving a neutral third party if needed,” he said.
Next Gen Goals
A primary goal of PMTS is creating a company that will be led by future generations of the Tuck family. To hit this mark, they’ve already put a succession plan in place. Ruby will enter “preferment” at the end 2026, meaning she will only work on the PMTS’ projects of her choice and has no required tasks associated with running the business. At that time, company shares will be distributed among Ken, Kelly and Tiffany, who will take full ownership of the business.
But Ruby plans to stay busy, continuing to work alongside her husband, Kennon, with The Kennon and Ruby Tuck Foundation, which was established to support youth development and education; to provide single parents with services to help them succeed; and to support the disadvantaged to help promote self confidence.”
