With a spirit of collaboration and a shared commitment to progress, 2025 is set to be a year of growth and opportunity for the River Region.

Montgomery Mayor, Steven L. Reed:

“As we look ahead to 2025, I’m excited to see the completion of many transformative Montgomery Forward projects. Residents will soon enjoy the new and revitalized community centers across our city. The opening of our $19-million state-of-the-art Firehouse 10 on Court Street will also mark a major milestone in our commitment to public safety. Montgomery is moving forward, and the future is brighter than ever for our great city.”

Pike Road Mayor, Gordon Stone:

“The Town of Pike Road is pleased to be undertaking a series of capital projects designed to foster community engagement. Under the title ONWARD Town of Pike Road, these projects include a community gathering building, auditorium/theater facility, a multipurpose arts and recreation facility and numerous educational support investments ranging from athletic facilities to an FFA teaching barn. ONWARD features new tennis and pickleball courts, multiple trail extensions, an all-inclusive playground, enhanced public safety services and improvements to four major intersections in our town. This capital improvement initiative also features the Town’s first economic development park. Collectively, these projects will further enhance the opportunity for people to live, work and play in the Town of Pike Road.”

Prattville Mayor, Bill Gillespie, Jr.:

  1. Montgomery expands with over 8,300 housing units planned or underway across the City (Photo)

Montgomery’s housing growth doesn’t show signs of slowing down. More than 5,000 housing units are under construction or planned across the city. Additional housing developments, currently being mapped, will further illustrate citywide growth. The green-highlighted areas represent approved land development plans with 5,157 new housing units either under construction or planned. The yellow-highlighted areas indicate potential housing developments totaling 3,194 units. Combined, these developments equal 8,351 new housing units.

  1. Montgomery welcomes $1 billion investment and 350 jobs with new beverage facilities

Manna Beverages and Ventures’ plan to establish a 180-acre beverage park at the Hope Hull exit off I-85 is expected to create 280 new jobs. The $600 million beverage production and distribution facility is expected to be operational this year. Another beverage company, Diageo, has announced plans for a manufacturing facility in Montgomery that is expected to add 76 jobs. The $415 million facility will be Diageo’s first in Alabama.

  1. Montgomery secures $30M data center investment, DC BLOX (Photo)

DC BLOX announced a transformative $30M investment in a new data center in Montgomery, positioning our region as a key technology corridor. A leading provider of digital infrastructure across the Southeastern United States, DC BLOX selected Montgomery as one of three new hyperscale edge node sites, alongside North Augusta and Huntsville, marking a strategic advancement in both the company’s regional expansion and Montgomery’s emergence as a key technology corridor. This hyperscale facility will provide up to 40MW of capacity, supporting industry giants like Amazon, Meta and Microsoft.

  1. New Inland Port facility set to boost Montgomery’s economic connectivity

The Alabama Port Authority’s 2022 initiative aims to establish a multi-million dollar inland port facility in Montgomery, extending the reach of its container intermodal terminal at the Port of Mobile. This intermodal terminal, designed to transfer goods seamlessly between transportation modes, will be strategically located west of Interstate 65. The facility will support the region’s retail, distribution, agribusiness and manufacturing sectors. Pending approval from the Federal Railroad Administration, the project is poised to advance toward completion, marking a significant milestone in regional economic development.

  1. Jim Wilson & Associates celebrates 50 years in business

Jim Wilson & Associates (JWA) is celebrating fifty years in the business in 2025. What started in the mid 1970’s with Jim Wilson, Jr. as a shopping center development company has grown to a successful, well-known, diversified entrepreneurial company now managed by his two sons, Jim Wilson, III and Will Wilson. Like any other successful business, JWA has survived, changed and pivoted to new ideas and ventures. Throughout the years, JWA has worked on renowned local projects like EastChase, Wynlakes, New Park and even the Riverchase Galleria in Birmingham.

  1. Huntingdon College breaks ground on new outdoor pool

Huntingdon College held a groundbreaking ceremony in November 2024 for part one of the Heart of Huntingdon Campaign, a fundraising campaign started in October of 2023 for a pool and wellness facility. President Anthony Leigh emphasized the pool is meant to be used as more than just a social space, they inend it to improve over all student wellness and mental health. The pool will be located on campus behind the Jackson Home building and is estimated to open Fall of 2025.

  1. The ACCC Division II Baseball Tournament returns to Montgomery for the first time since 1988

For the first time since 1988, the ACCC Division II Baseball Tournament will be returning to Montgomery. The tournament will be held April 23-27, 2025 and will be played at Historic Paterson Field in the capital city. The Championship and “if necessary” game will be at Riverwalk Stadium, home of the Montgomery Biscuits. For the past two years, the Tournament has been played in Oxford..

  1. Meta Platforms’ Montgomery data center in construction

Technology company, Meta Platforms, plans to open an $800 million data center in Alabama’s capital city that will build on the company’s previous investment in the state. Meta’s new 715,000-square-foot, AI-optimized data center will be built off Interstate 65 in Montgomery, across from the Hyundai automotive assembly plant. The Montgomery data center, reflecting Meta’s latest design, will become its 24th data hub and the 20th in the United States. Construction officially began in February 2024 and will continue throughout the year. The final project is expected to go online at the end of 2026 and bring over 100 jobs.

  1. The Riverfront Greenway Trail extension plans to break ground in the Spring (Photo)

The extension of the Riverfront Greenway Trail is an important investment for the whole community: increasing access to nature, to recreational opportunities and creating meaningful connections to the flora and fauna of the Alabama River and to the history and life of the City. The Riverfront Greenway Trail creates a two-mile loop around the Riverfront.

Shaw Technologies, a leader in IT support and digital solutions, is set to expand its footprint with the launch of a brand-new location at the start of the year. The new location will not only enhance their operational capacity but also position Shaw Technologies to meet the rising demand for advanced IT solutions across the region. With this exciting development, the company continues to strengthen its role as a trusted technology partner in the community.

  1. Faulkner University to launch School of Nursing in Fall 2025

Faulkner University announced the launch of its School of Nursing in Fall 2025. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is designed to equip aspiring nurses with the knowledge, skills, and compassion necessary to thrive in today’s ever-evolving healthcare landscape, all while embodying the hands and feet of Christ. With a blend of rigorous academics and hands-on clinical experiences, students will be prepared to deliver exceptional, patient-centered care in a supportive Christian learning environment. Applications for the upper division are now being accepted starting this month.

  1. Dutch Bros Coffee set to open in Prattville

Founded in 1992, Dutch Bros Coffee has grown to over 950 locations nationwide and is now making its way to Prattville, Alabama. The company plans to open its first local location at 1874 E. Main Street in the first quarter of 2025. Known for its handcrafted and specialty drinks, Dutch Bros is bringing its unique coffee culture to the Prattville community.

  1. Fall Line Overlook in Wetumpka will open in 2025

In early 2025, Main Street Wetumpka will debut the Fall Line Overlook, a scenic spot along the Coosa River celebrating the city’s stunning landscapes and unique geology. This new destination highlights the Fall Line, where rolling hills meet flat plains, offering breathtaking views and a glimpse into Wetumpka’s geological and cultural story. Conveniently located near Coaches Corner and The Kelly Fitzpatrick Center for the Arts, the overlook is set to boost downtown activity, drawing visitors while supporting local businesses. Combining history, natural beauty and community pride, the Fall Line Overlook is poised to become a favorite destination for locals and visitors alike.

  1. Prattville City Council approves renovations for City Hall Chambers

The Prattville City Council has approved a bid from Bienville Construction Services, LLC for the renovation of the Council Chambers at Prattville City Hall. The project, totaling $453,195, will be funded through the Capital Projects Fund in the City of Prattville Budget. Mayor Bill Gillespie announced that during the renovation, council meetings and other gatherings will be relocated to alternative venues.

  1. Tezal-Con: Montgomery’s new two-day video game convention coming in February

Tezal-Con, a two-day video game convention, is coming to Montgomery for the first time and will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in downtown on February 8-9. Similar to a comic book convention, Tezal-Con will feature a wide range of activities including gaming, panel discussions, an artist alley, cosplay, vendors and more. Created by Chad Leuci, Tezal-Con was previously held for two years in Daleville before relocating to Montgomery. 

  1. Millbrook set to begin phase II of the 17 Springs project

Phase II of the 17 Springs project is set to open tentatively on February 18, 2025. This phase will feature The Fieldhouse, an expansive 87,000-square-foot multi-purpose event center, a bowl stadium with seating for over 6,000 spectators, a state-of-the-art 8-lane competitive running track, and six softball/baseball diamonds designed for high-level competition. Millbrook will also be announcing the commercial/retail establishments that will be locating in The Marketplace at 17 Springs.

  1. Downtown event shuttles will enhance accessibility in Wetumpka

In 2025, Wetumpka is making it easier than ever to explore downtown with the introduction of two event shuttles. These executive golf carts will provide convenient transportation for visitors and attendees, shuttling them between the city’s public parking lots and bustling downtown events. Designed to enhance the downtown experience, the shuttles will also be available during peak shopping days, offering a seamless way to navigate Wetumpka’s charming streets and vibrant shops. This new service reflects the city’s commitment to accessibility and creating a welcoming environment for all.

  1. A new outdoor venue is coming to downtown Prattville

As part of the redevelopment of the Hancock-Whitney Bank in historic downtown Prattville, the City Council approved the project for a new outdoor venue on June 6. The outdoor venue will feature a stage, spacious green spaces, a designated food truck area and more. This exciting addition to downtown will enhance the city’s cultural offerings and drive economic growth. Residents can look forward to a variety of events and activities in a beautifully designed and inviting space. Construction, led by Construction One, Inc., is expected to be completed in 2025.

  1. Creative Placemaking Communities and The King’s Canvas to hold the Power of Community Conference

The Power of Community Conference will be held on April 1-3 at the Kress on Dexter. This conference serves as the annual gathering of creative placemaking professionals in the Southern region and is centered on social and economic justice, equity and inclusion and grassroots community-led efforts that create positive impact and enhance the quality of life for smaller communities across the Southern U.S. The Keynote Speaker will be the Internationally Renowned Attorney and Civil Rights Leader, Bryan Stevenson.

  1. Capital Tractor to open a new location in Montgomery

Capital Tractor began in 1982, and over the years, they have grown to be among the largest Kubota equipment dealers in the US with three current locations in Alabama and one location in Mississippi. After 42 years in business, they are building a new location in Montgomery with plans to open its doors in early 2025.

  1. Wetumpka will launch their new tourism initiative, Discover Wetumpka

2025 marks an exciting new chapter for Wetumpka’s tourism scene with the launch of Discover Wetumpka, the city’s first dedicated tourism initiative. Featuring a dynamic new website and active social media channels on Facebook and Instagram, Discover Wetumpka will showcase the city’s natural beauty, rich history and unique attractions to visitors near and far.

  1. Montgomery Smooth Jazz Festival is moving to 2025

The Montgomery Smooth Jazz Festival was originally scheduled for September 2024, but has been rescheduled to March 14-15 of this year. The festival celebrates various music genres with an emphasis on Smooth Jazz and R & B and consists of two days filled with live music at the Riverfront Amphitheater, food trucks, vendors and more. Any previously purchased tickets will remain valid for the new date.

  1. The Town of Pike Road announces new additions to the community

This year, Pike Road can look forward to the completion of their all-inclusive community playground and witness progress in the Town’s steps toward improving their Arts District, which includes plans for adding a community theater/auditorium and a historic community gathering facility, along with a multipurpose arts and recreation facility. 

  1. Wetumpka’s Crommelin Park reopens with exciting new features

2025 brings fresh energy to Wetumpka as Crommelin Park reopens following a major improvement project. The enhanced park now boasts a brand-new dog park, thoughtfully designed with separate areas for big and small dogs, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all furry friends. Additionally, the city has added six state-of-the-art pickleball courts, catering to the growing demand for this popular sport.   1. New Park set to open new 52,000 square foot neighborhood center in Montgomery

New Park Development is a master-planned community in the River Region. The development offers assisted living sites, multifamily sites, single-family sites, commercial sites and retail sites including a 52,000 sq ft neighborhood center projected to open in fall 2025. The center will offer a grocery store, shop space and outparcels.
