Degree: Master of Science in Prosthetics & Orthotics
How It\’s Unique
Alabama State University (ASU) is the only university in the state of Alabama to offer the Master of Science in Prosthetics & Orthotics, and only one of 13 in the nation to offer the degree. “To consistently produce game changers in the practice of prosthetics and orthotics is thrilling and history making,” said Scott Bretl, MSPO, CPO/LPO, Program Director/Department Chair, “and we are ecstatic to continue to improve care in the treatment of persons with physical disabilities.”
What It\’s Worth
In the MSPO program, students learn how to assess patients with impairment of human movement or musculoskeletal abnormalities, formulate appropriate prescription recommendations, implement O&P treatment plans using effective clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills, comply with practice management plans and integrate in lifelong learning skills.
Students Speak
Shima Nixon lost both her legs in an accident. At the time, she was studying to become a nurse. Then, as she was introduced to prosthetics and began using them herself, she changed course. She recently graduated from ASU with her M.S. in Prosthetics & Orthotics and is using her story to inspire others. In her prosthetics work, she hopes to make further advancements in the field.
