Lessons Learned from 25 Years in the Investment Advisory Business

October 1st marked the 25th anniversary of the founding of Jackson Thornton Asset Management. It’s an unbelievable story for an investment advisory firm, born from a CPA firm, to have accomplished milestones such as (almost) $2 billion under management and more than 1,000 client lives touched by our services. I tell people frequently that I can’t wait until ESPN comes out with the “30 for 30” episode about our organization.

So much has happened over the last twenty-five years in our world. Although we didn’t know it at the time, the stock market was about to experience significant losses from the Dot- com bubble. Next, came the tragedy of 9/11. These were soon followed by the Iraq war, Hurricane Katrina, the Global Financial Crisis, multiple hotly contested Presidential elections, COVID-19 and countless more stories. With all of these challenges, it’s amazing that from January 1, 2000 through July 30, 2024, the S&P 500 increased 270%! Through it all, we have been here guiding our clients to successful outcomes with their financial goals.

WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED THROUGH THIS PROCESS THAT HAS ALLOWED US TO HELP OUR CLIENTS BE SO SUCCESSFUL?

  • “Investing is simple, but it ain’t easy.” This is a quote from our founder, Lanny Crane, and I think it captures our approach to investing. People frequently come to us looking for a lottery stock that will increase their wealth, but finding such a gem is extraordinarily difficult. We believe investing success is achieved by taking the returns that the market gives us, staying patient and embracing discipline.
  • “Investing is table stakes. You have to bring more.” This quote is from Adam Birenbaum, the President of one of our key business partners, Buckingham Strategic Partners. When you think of it, all investors in the aggregate only receive the return the market provides. Therefore, for every investor that beats the market, there is likely one that underperforms. We work with clients on value-added services such as tax optimization, estate planning and retirement planning in an effort to lead clients to positive outcomes in pursuit of their financial goals.
  • “There is always something to worry about.” I’m going to attribute this quote to myself, and I would estimate that investors have done more harm than good to their portfolios by waiting for the dust to settle on the news of the day. Thinking about the challenges mentioned above, if an investor had waited on the all clear signal from the market before investing, they likely would have never invested a single dollar. Fear and worry are not good investment strategies.

We are so proud to have accomplished this milestone and extremely blessed for those who came before us to pave the way. And, in celebration of our 25th, we’re announcing our new name – Jackson Thornton Wealth Management. We believe this name better reflects who we are and what we do for our clients each day.
