Tuition, books, housing, meals and more.
For many students, heading off to college brings a new level of freedom. And, new financial responsibilities.
Success in college doesn’t just happen. It’s planned. With the right tools, today’s students can step confidently into their financial futures.
That is why Regions is helping students take their next big leap with financial confidence. For years, Regions has provided no cost financial education resources to help people manage their money through our financial education program, Next Step.
It is more than advice — it’s a genuine head start. As students begin their college journey, it’s important to start building strong financial habits.
Here are a few things to consider.
- Plan and Prepare
Financial conversations can feel intimidating, but they’re critical. Our Greenprint financial planning program is designed to help every family create a unique plan to address their financial goals.
Create a budget with your family to help set a good precedent moving forward. Direct costs like a meal plan, housing, tuition, etc. are all the costs you would expect, but other expenses, such as parking permits, football tickets, and personal expenses, should be considered as well.
- Look for Financial Assistance
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) early and correctly.
There are many grants, scholarships, and other ways to help pay for higher education. Explore local scholarships, employer-based opportunities, and free scholarship search tools like Sallie Mae’s database.
The resources are out there—you just have to look.
Financial preparedness also means opening a student bank account. This will help in managing monetary assistance received and build a solid banking relationship. And even a small savings account can add up. Set aside a little from every payment or gift to help with unexpected costs or future goals.
- Be Scam Smart
While college is a time for fun and learning, fraudsters can impact the college experience.
From fake scholarship websites to gas pump skimmers, stay vigilant on protecting sensitive information. Verifying payment requests through known contacts rather than trusting links or numbers sent via email or text.
Fraudsters are smart. But with awareness and a few smart habits, you can protect yourself—and your money.
- Budget Your Balance
It is critical to create a budget by tracking income and expenses and prioritizing needs over wants. It’s not about saying no to everything fun. It’s about using your budget to make smart choices so you can enjoy college without going broke and going home.
At Regions, we believe everyone deserves a financial plan. College is a time for growth—financially and personally. Start strong, stay informed, and invest in your future.
As students and families prepare for this special life change, Regions associates are available to help create a plan for success. To learn more, visit any Regions branch across the River Region or visit www.regions.com to schedule a Greenprint appointment.
