$10 million museum complex planned for downtown Prattville to preserve the city’s rich history

Prattville, AL – The Autauga County Heritage Association has announced plans for an exciting new museum complex in downtown Prattville, aiming to celebrate and preserve the city’s unique history while serving as an educational hub and community gathering space.

Dubbed “The PRATT,” this $10 million project will highlight Prattville’s rich heritage, tracing back to its founding in 1839 by New England native Daniel Pratt. Pratt selected the scenic fall line of Autauga Creek to power his industrial empire, creating the town that proudly bears his name today.

The museum complex will be situated on approximately six acres of the historic gin shop site in downtown Prattville, including frontage along the mill pond. Central to the project is the renovation of an 11,600-square-foot research and development building from the gin shop era, which will house state-of-the-art STEM classrooms. Additionally, the plans include a newly constructed 10,098-square-foot museum and a 3,200-square-foot event hall, both of which will overlook the pond and be connected by a striking glass hall.

Outdoor amenities will further enhance the community’s experience, featuring a canopied picnic area, an educational pavilion, a flag plaza, a fountain, and convenient parking. The event hall, capable of seating 400 guests, will include a full catering kitchen and be available for community use.

The site’s location near The Mill—a recent redevelopment of five historic masonry gin shop buildings into loft apartments—and the Prattville Public Safety Building further integrates this new cultural space into the heart of downtown Prattville’s revitalization.

“The PRATT” is poised to become a cornerstone of Prattville’s identity, providing a destination for history enthusiasts, students, and local residents alike. By merging historical preservation with modern amenities, this project reflects Prattville’s commitment to honoring its past while looking toward the future.
