MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Alabama State University (ASU) and YMCA of Greater Montgomery have announced a groundbreaking partnership to establish the first-ever YMCA on the campus of a historically Black college or university (HBCU). The new facility is set to open in Spring 2026 and will serve as a vibrant hub for health, wellness, and community engagement for ASU students and the greater Montgomery community.
At a press conference held on October 13, university and YMCA leaders unveiled plans to transform a renovated 5,000-square-foot facility near ASU’s Department of Communications building into a state-of-the-art fitness, wellness, and community center.
The new campus-based YMCA will offer a dynamic program of services, including:
- Health fairs and mental wellness workshops
- Specialized fitness and educational classes
- Youth leadership development and sports camps led by ASU coaches
By integrating ASU’s academic and athletic resources with the YMCA’s national expertise in community wellness, the partnership aims to foster inclusive opportunities, support student and community wellbeing, and strengthen the region’s overall health ecosystem.
The facility is expected to welcome its first members in Spring 2026.
