Montgomery, AL – June 30, 2025 – Baptist Medical Center South, the largest healthcare facility in Central Alabama and the region’s only Trauma Center, has officially begun construction on a $14 million expansion of its Emergency Department. This major project comes in response to the growing demand for emergency care across a 17-county service area. In 2024 alone, the Emergency Department at Baptist South treated nearly 57,000 patients.
With 53 current Emergency Department treatment areas, the need for additional space and updated infrastructure is critical. The expansion will add 11,205 square feet and increase treatment capacity to 83 rooms, with flexibility for up to 98 treatment areas. Each room will feature state-of-the-art technology designed to improve patient outcomes in critical situations.
The project is expected to be completed in early 2026.
“As our region grows, so does the need for high-quality, accessible emergency care,” said a spokesperson for Baptist Health. “This expansion reflects our continued commitment to meeting the healthcare needs of our community with excellence and compassion.”
What to Expect During Construction
While construction is underway, Baptist South remains fully operational. Patients arriving by ambulance will not be affected. For those arriving by private transportation, a temporary entrance and designated Emergency Department parking will be available on the east side of the hospital, across from the UAB Medicine Multispecialty Clinic building.
To ensure safety and meet Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) requirements, the service road in front of the hospital will be closed for the duration of the project. Detour signage and a free shuttle service will help guide and assist patients and visitors. To request the shuttle, call (334) 747-5555.
An expanded welcome area has already been completed, featuring security screening, digital registration, and guest coordinators to escort patients to the appropriate area.
“Growth brings change, and while there may be some temporary inconveniences, we are doing everything possible to minimize disruptions,” said the spokesperson. “We thank our community for their patience and support as we work to better serve Central Alabama.”
