CB&S Bank Ranks #16 Among America’s Top-Performing Banks with $2B–$10B in Assets

CB&S Bank has been named the 16th top-performing bank in the nation among banks with assets between $2 billion and $10 billion, according to a recent report by Capital Performance Group published in American Banker. The $2.7 billion-asset bank operates 56 branches across Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee and employs more than 500 people.

Headquartered in Russellville, Alabama, CB&S Bank jumped 10 spots from its 2023 ranking, driven in part by an impressive 21.84% loan growth—the highest increase among all top-20 performers. The bank also saw revenue rise 4.51% in 2024, with a return on average equity outperforming the average of all peer institutions over the last three years.

The top 20 banks in this asset class demonstrated exceptional financial discipline in 2024, with a median net interest margin of 4.08%, significantly higher than the 3.18% median for all banks in the category. These top performers, including CB&S Bank, effectively managed funding costs by maintaining a higher proportion of demand and transaction deposits, navigating a higher-rate environment with resilience.

Return on average common equity among the top banks was nearly double that of all banks in the asset class, while their median efficiency ratio was approximately 13 percentage points lower, underscoring superior operational efficiency. Despite these gains, CB&S Bank’s net income fell 7.35% from 2023, consistent with broader industry trends where expense growth impacted profitability.

Even amid a generally slower lending environment, CB&S Bank and its peer leaders maintained strong momentum, with CB&S posting the highest loan growth of any top performer.

With an average asset size of roughly $4.2 billion among peer institutions, CB&S Bank’s rise to #16 highlights its strategic growth and commitment to delivering strong financial performance and value to customers and shareholders.
