Mayor Reed breaks ground on Freedom Village Housing Development

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — On January 31, Mayor Steven L. Reed broke ground on Freedom Village, a new affordable housing development for the elderly located off Edgar D. Nixon Avenue (behind Lanier High School). Freedom Village is expected to be completed in 2025. It will comprise 56 two-bedroom units in a three-story, elevator-serviced building.

This project is part of Mayor Reed’s Re-imagine West Montgomery Initiative. It is less than ½ block from the new fire station and the Fairview Farmers Market.

\”I extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who has actively contributed to this extraordinary project. The addition of 56 residential units primarily intended for elderly senior citizens presents a remarkable opportunity not only to revitalize this important corridor but also to expand housing options in our city. Our goal is to introduce a mix of affordable housing, mixed-use developments, and single-family homes in strategic locations throughout Montgomery,\” said Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed.

\”This corridor holds immense significance for our city and our community. We recognize the challenges our senior citizens face, particularly those with fixed incomes and mobility limitations. Therefore, we are committed to expanding public transportation, improving housing options, and ensuring everyone in our community can access safe and affordable shelter. Whether you are a senior citizen living independently or a retiree seeking a comfortable and supportive environment, we want you to know that our city is dedicated to providing high-quality housing developments across all neighborhoods. I want to emphasize that we are not solely focused on West Montgomery; our goal is to ensure equitable distribution of resources and development. We will not limit our efforts to a single area of the city.”

The project is sponsored by the Community Action Agency of North Alabama (CAPNA) with funds from HOME (Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS) and the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.

The Alabama Housing Finance Authority, Regions Bank, the Community Action Agency of Northeast Alabama, Inc., and the Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) are also involved in the collaboration.
