Montgomery invests in Riverfront Greenway Trail to drive socioeconomic growth and regional connectivity

MONTGOMERY, AL, January 7, 2024 – The Riverfront Greenway Trail, a key asset in Montgomery’s urban infrastructure, is set to play a pivotal role in the city’s future growth, blending its rich history with a bold vision for tomorrow. Building on a foundation of $1.86 million invested since 2016, which has established three scenic miles connecting Maxwell AFB Visitor Center to Riverfront Park, the city now announces a $2.4 million extension northward. This expansion will enhance access and create new opportunities for both residents and visitors.

The planned extension to Shady Street Trailhead Park underscores Montgomery’s commitment to leveraging green infrastructure for sustainable economic, environmental, and cultural benefits. Upon completion, the expanded trail will connect thousands of workers and residents to key destinations, fostering recreation, economic activity, and community events.

“The Riverfront Greenway Trail is more than just a recreational amenity; it is central to our vision for Montgomery’s future,” said Mayor Steven L. Reed. “This trail not only improves connectivity but also enhances our quality of life, promotes sustainability, and drives economic growth. It exemplifies the intersection of innovation and tradition, reinforcing our city’s place as a regional hub for culture and commerce.”

Past and Present Impact

The Riverfront Greenway Trail has already proven to be a transformative force. With over 250,000 visitors annually, the trail generates an estimated $8 to $9.6 million in economic impact each year. It supports up to 90 full-time jobs and bolsters local businesses by driving foot traffic to nearby retail, restaurants, and services. This activity contributes up to $56,000 in local tax revenues annually. Additionally, properties within walking distance of the trail have seen value increases of up to 6%, benefiting homeowners and businesses alike.

The trail also provides significant environmental and health benefits. By connecting people to nature, it promotes public health, mitigates urban heat, and supports local wildlife habitats. Its educational programming fosters environmental awareness, laying the groundwork for a sustainable future.

A Vision for the Future

As Montgomery moves forward with the next phase of the Riverfront Greenway Trail, the project’s potential to unlock further socioeconomic growth is clear. The planned northward extension is expected to generate an additional $4.9 to $5.9 million in annual visitor spending, acting as a powerful driver of economic activity and cultural vibrancy.

“The Riverfront Greenway Trail isn’t just about enhancing Montgomery’s beauty or recreational offerings; it’s about creating sustainable growth for the future,” said Frank Robinson, Director of Economic Development. “This project will help attract new businesses, residents, and investments while strengthening our city’s position as a regional leader. It’s a bold step forward for Montgomery’s ongoing revitalization and growth.”

The enhanced trail will be a catalyst for revitalizing Montgomery’s waterfront, attracting new investments and supporting the city’s long-term economic sustainability. This expansion aligns with the city’s broader goals of fostering inclusive growth, revitalizing the downtown area, and building a sense of pride and place for its residents.
