Montgomery Public Schools expands career preparation programs

Montgomery, AL – Montgomery Public Schools (MPS) is strengthening its commitment to preparing students for successful careers by expanding its career and technical education (CTE) programs. With the addition of cosmetology and barbering, MPS now offers 26 specialized career preparation programs designed to equip students with industry-recognized certifications before graduation.

The district’s diverse career pathways, ranging from health sciences to engineering, provide students with real-world skills that align with workforce demands in Montgomery and beyond. LaTonya Sibley, Director of Workforce Development for MPS, is dedicated to ensuring students graduate career-ready.

The engineering program is another key component of MPS’s career preparation efforts. Senior Duncan Freedman is gaining hands-on experience in engineering principles through classroom instruction and robotics competitions, preparing him for a future in STEM fields.

Students across the district, including those who attend Brewbaker Technology Magnet School or are bused to Montgomery Preparatory Academy for Career Technologies (MPACT), have access to these robust career development opportunities.

MPS is also actively seeking partnerships with local businesses to enhance career readiness through job shadowing, internships, and mentorship and encouraging local employers to join MPS in shaping the future workforce of Montgomery.

According to the Alabama Department of Labor, the state’s top five fastest-growing occupations include nurse practitioners, cooks, occupational therapy assistants, medical and health services managers, and physical therapist assistants. MPS’s career pathways directly align with these growing fields, ensuring that students graduate with the skills needed to meet workforce demands.
