Montgomery Whitewater launched their first after-school kayaking instructional program, introducing a new option for sporting hobbies and potential career paths for young people in Central Alabama. They’ve created this program as part of their commitment to cultivating a healthy, active lifestyle culture and to create new professional opportunities in the region. The four-week program for middle and high school level youth of all skill levels teaches the ins and outs of Class II-IV rapids from trained professionals in the park’s safe, controlled environment and all necessary equipment for the program is provided to participants.
As you know, whitewater rafting and paddle sports have not traditionally been widely available to students in the region, and this program not only develops confidence and physical fitness but may inspire a life-long interest in an outdoor lifestyle that not only improves the student’s quality of life but also opens doors to career options around the world. In fact, several of Montgomery Whitewater’s instructors (including Anthony Lopez, who you’ll remember well!) were first introduced to paddle sports through similar programs and have traveled and worked internationally as a result.
