Olympic & International Canoe Slalom athletes gathered at Montgomery Whitewater for ICF World Ranking Race

Montgomery, AL – Montgomery Whitewater hosted the 2026 ICF Canoe Slalom World Ranking Spring Races on March 13-15th, welcoming nearly 100 elite canoe slalom athletes from around the world to compete on its Olympic-standard competition channel. The event brought together an extraordinary field of talent, including national and international Olympians, Team USA competitors, and rising paddlers representing the next generation of Olympic hopefuls.

Athletes competed for valuable world ranking points as they continued preparing for the road to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Among the competitors were Evy Leibfarth, a two-time Olympian and bronze medalist in the C1 event at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, and four-time Olympian Casey Eichfeld.

Competitors from across the United States raced alongside international athletes representing Canada, Brazil, Italy, Australia, South America, and beyond, making it one of the most competitive canoe slalom events held in North America this season. Spectators had the opportunity to watch world-class paddlers navigate Montgomery Whitewater’s Olympic-standard course in a fast-paced and highly technical race environment.

Events took place throughout the weekend, giving attendees multiple opportunities to see athletes tackle powerful rapids, tight gates, and dynamic course features from several viewing areas around the venue. Saturday’s Kayak Cross competition proved especially exciting, as four athletes raced head-to-head down the channel, battling through whitewater, gates, and direct contact in one of the sport’s newest and most action-packed Olympic disciplines.

The event marked the fourth international race hosted at Montgomery Whitewater since the park opened in July 2023. Over a two-week period, elite athletes from around the globe trained and competed at the venue, further elevating its reputation as a premier destination for whitewater training and competition.

By attracting world-class athletes, coaches, and international visitors, events like the ICF Canoe Slalom World Ranking Spring Races continued to position Montgomery, Alabama on the global stage while generating meaningful tourism and economic impact for the River Region.
