MONTGOMERY, Ala. (March 15, 2023) – Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP is pleased to announce that Charles “Chuck” Stewart, a partner in the firm’s Montgomery office, has been named president-elect of the Alabama Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). Mr. Stewart will serve in that role until November 2023 when he will become president of ABOTA’s Alabama Chapter for a one-year term during 2024.
“We congratulate Chuck on his new role as president-elect of the American Board of Trial Advocates,” said Bradley Chairman of the Board and Managing Partner Jonathan M. Skeeters. “In addition to his achievements as a highly regarded litigator over more than three decades, we all benefit from Chuck’s leadership with multiple legal industry groups that work to enhance our profession and the practice of law on behalf of clients.”
Founded in 1958, ABOTA is a national association and invitation-only organization of experienced trial lawyers and judges. ABOTA and its members are dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the civil jury trial right provided by the Seventh Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. ABOTA membership consists of more than 7,300 lawyers — equally balanced between plaintiff and defense — and judges spread among 96 chapters in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
With more than 35 years of experience, Mr. Stewart has successfully tried a vast number of complex trials involving business disputes, product liability, intellectual property, construction, employment, and catastrophic personal injuries in multiple states. He has defended several class actions to defense verdicts, including matters involving antitrust claims (price-fixing), racial steering in the sale of real estate, and group health insurance. He has represented clients faced with government investigations and qui tam matters, and defended clients faced with bet-the-company multi-district litigation. In addition, Mr. Stewart has successfully tried several other types of complex cases, and has represented attorneys, hospitals, and architects in actions alleging malpractice.
Mr. Stewart is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, an Advocate in ABOTA, and he was the first attorney under the age of 40 to be elected president of the Alabama Defense Lawyer’s Association. He also is active in practice-related organizations, including the International Association of Defense Counsel, the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel, and DRI, where he served on DRI’s board of directors and later as chair of DRI’s Product Liability Committee.
