What inspired you to start Valiant Cross Academy?

The inspiration behind Valiant Cross Academy (VCA) stemmed from our profound desire to uplift and transform the educational experiences of young men in Montgomery. Witnessing the educational disparities and challenges faced by these students, Frederick and I were driven by a passion to create an institution that not only provided academic rigor but also enveloped its scholars in love and support. Valiant Cross Academy was born from our heartfelt mission to provide excellent educational experiences and opportunities, ensuring that every scholar has the chance to succeed and flourish.

How does the academy’s emphasis on structure, discipline and Christian values shape the educational experience for scholars?

This mission has remained steadfast as the academy has expanded to include an elementary school component and a middle school microschool at Saint Paul AME Church, both offering a more intimate learning environment. The academy’s focus on structure, discipline and Christian values ensures a holistic educational experience that nurtures students spiritually, academically and socially.

How do faith-based values play a role in the daily life of the academy?

Faith is the guiding principle at VCA, influencing every aspect of our culture. Each class begins with prayer, affirmations and meditation, and students attend Bible class daily. This spiritual grounding is complemented by active participation in community service projects, encouraging students to live out their faith by making positive contributions to society.

What are some ways the community can get involved in the school’s mission or contribute to its success?

VCA faces the significant challenge of combating stereotypes. These young men are naturally intelligent, creative and capable, and we work tirelessly to affirm these qualities through our educational programs. The community has been instrumental in supporting VCA’s mission, beyond mere support; individuals are encouraged to visit the academy to witness firsthand the hope and love that permeate its environment, further amplifying their commitment to the school’s success and mission.

How do the founders backgrounds influence the academy’s success?

Our curriculum is designed to foster a robust academic foundation, with a distinctive focus on literacy and math, supported by innovative teaching methods. To prepare students for life beyond graduation, we are integrating vocational tracks, connecting students with potential career paths early in their education. The dedication and diverse leadership experiences of our founders and teaching staff cultivate a supportive and driven culture, contributing significantly to the academic success and holistic development of our students.

Can you discuss the importance of strong black male role models in shaping the lives of the scholars at Valiant Cross Academy?

Representation matters. We intentionally seek out role models who embody the values and aspirations we wish to instill in our students. These mentors provide a tangible vision of success and resilience, showing young scholars that they, too, can achieve great things. Mentorship is a vital component of our approach to student development, as it fosters both spiritual and academic growth. My own experience in mentoring, including the creation of the Brother2Brother/Sister2Sister program in Autauga County, has shown me the profound impact  that dedicated role models can have on students’ lives.

What are some of the success stories from the first graduating class in 2022?

The first graduating classes since 2022 have truly set the bar high with an impressive array of accomplishments. These young men have embarked on diverse and prestigious paths, joining the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, as well as enrolling in esteemed institutions such as Marion Military Institute, Alabama State University, Alabama A&M University, University of Alabama, Auburn University, Auburn University at Montgomery, Morehouse College, Tuskegee and Troy University. Their commitment to service and education is further exemplified by those interning at impactful organizations like the Equal Justice Initiative and the Beasley Allen Law Firm.

What are the long-term goals for Valiant Cross Academy, and how do you envision expanding the school’s impact in the future?

Valiant Cross Academy’s long-term vision is to establish a comprehensive K-12 education model that not only transforms the academic landscape for young men in Montgomery but also serves as a replicable blueprint for success in other cities and states. By expanding into a full elementary school, we aim to create a seamless educational experience that fosters academic excellence and personal growth from the earliest years through graduation.
