Q&A with Dr. Larry McLemore, Head of School, Saint James School

How has the world of student recruitment shifted and how are you adapting?

When it comes to introducing new families to Saint James, we offer an individualized focus for each student and family. We take the time to understand each child’s values, interests and aspirations, guiding them with our “whole child” approach to learning and growth. Student experience is at the heart of Saint James. We want prospective students to truly feel what it means to be part of our Trojan family. That’s why we invite them to engage with current students during campus tours and shadowing opportunities, allowing them to connect with our vibrant community and see firsthand how Saint James empowers students to thrive academically, socially and personally.

How do you manage the competition and make sure your message is heard?

Our students love their school and share their experiences. We have many alumni who are grateful to share the impact Saint James has made in their lives. For many years, Saint James has proudly welcomed military families into our community. We frequently hear from international service members attending the Air War College about how excited their children are to move to the U.S., eager to experience the warm stories they’ve heard about life in Montgomery and the exceptional community at Saint James.

We are always focused on making our school community better and taking action to strengthen our mission and the education we provide our children. We continually ask how we can serve our students better, strengthen our community and enhance educational experiences for the future.

What new programs have you launched?

We are grateful that we now have a full-time learning support director. We’ve offered learning support in the past, so we are excited to have expanded our efforts to a more robust program. Saint James has a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum and we are dedicated to supporting our students academically. We offer a writing center, peer tutoring, targeted instruction and other learning support such as teacher-directed tutoring and academic guidance. Each Saint James student is challenged academically and supported to realize their individual potential and embrace their unique strengths. At Saint James, we are committed to providing our students the tools and resources to reach their goals.

We’ve also expanded our tuition assistance program to better serve families in our area. An investment in Saint James School tuition pays off for a lifetime as a result of the complete whole child education we provide at an extraordinary value. We are dedicated to making STJ affordable for families by offering financial assistance, a multi-child discount and offering a discount to our military service members.

How does Saint James School stand out?

Saint James School is completely committed to developing the whole person. At Saint James, cultivating the growth of the whole child means that while we enthusiastically challenge and support our students in academics, activities, arts and athletics. We believe that each child’s heart matters most. We are values-centered and we focus on building good hearts and developing children to become values-directed. Our Saint James Trojan core values of character, commitment, courage and community are woven into all we do. Our aim is that students finish their years at Saint James not only prepared for college but also as well-rounded individuals who have built strength of character on the inside and are ready to take on leadership roles in their communities and make an impact for good.

Choosing our school means choosing a place where your child will be known, loved, challenged and supported every step of the way and in all areas of their lives. We believe that is why we are the premier school community in Central Alabama and it is why we remain committed to uplifting children and families in our local area.
