How does your approach to education reflect your community’s values?
At The Montgomery Academy, our approach to education grows directly from the values that shape our school community. We strive to create a supportive, challenging and joyful learning environment where students thrive. Strong relationships among teachers, students and families anchor this work and allow us to nurture and empower each child to reach their fullest potential. We intentionally cultivate curiosity, confidence and character by valuing diverse perspectives. Through authentic learning experiences and opportunities to lead and serve, our students come to understand their role in strengthening their communities. In this way, our daily work reflects not only the mission of MA, but also the shared values that define who we are.
What new initiatives at MA are enhancing student growth and experience? Last year, The Montgomery Academy launched several initiatives to support student growth and engagement. Across all divisions, students no longer have access to personal electronic devices during the academic day, while still receiving age-appropriate technological tools to succeed as learners. Leadership development is emphasized through programs like “Eagle Assembly” for 4th graders, and students explore the River Region through the “City as Our School” program—visiting cultural, educational and civic institutions. Service remains central to the MA experience, with students K-12 participating in meaningful community outreach, ranging from Backpacks for Kids to Respite Ministry.
What makes your school stand out to families?
The Montgomery Academy is a unique place. We stand apart from other schools in our commitment to our mission, our core values, our approach to education and above all, our community. It all begins with the community that our youngest students find as they enter the Lower School which continues through Middle School and Upper School, finally culminating when they walk across the stage at Commencement and depart MA for the next stage of their journey. Throughout their time at MA, our students learn the skills and habits of thought that encourage them to engage in an ever-evolving effort to become the best versions of themselves as they prepare for future opportunities to lead.
How do private schools shape the future of learning and leadership?
I believe that all schools – independent, public, parochial – play a significant role in shaping the future in our state as we all seek to provide opportunities for our young people to learn the skills and habits of thought that will prepare them for their future careers and to be productive members of society. Here at MA, we are focused on developing leadership skills so that our students will be prepared with the academic knowledge and the skills necessary to be tomorrow’s leaders in our state and beyond.
