Q&A with Pamela McLemore, Executive Director, Montgomery Christian School

How has the world of student recruitment shifted and how are you adapting?

Montgomery Christian School has experienced exciting momentum, particularly in light of the growing support for school choice in Alabama. As a result, the school had a waitlist of 70-80 students in the past year, demonstrating the high demand for enrollment and the hope the education at MCS brings to families and our community. One of the unique aspects of Montgomery Christian School is that every child is on scholarship, which is made possible through a combination of community donations and external funding. Additionally, 101 of the students are supported by the Alabama Accountability Act Scholarship, administered through the Scholarships for Kids program, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent students from attending and benefiting from the school’s educational offerings. With the shift to school choice opportunities in Alabama, our community truly excels in education, partnership and the development of the family.

How do you manage the competition and make sure your message is heard?

Montgomery Christian School offers a distinctive educational opportunity for families with limited resources, providing their children with an exceptional education and a partnership unlike any other in Montgomery and the River Region. Our parents are the strongest advocates and voices for our program. To support scholarship fundraising, Montgomery Christian School hosts a monthly “lunch and learn” for potential community partners, offers private tours, speaks at civic clubs and churches and organizes its largest annual fundraiser, Art Splash.

What new programs have you launched?

Montgomery Christian School’s art and music programs are key highlights of our curriculum, along with our Parent University. The elementary Art History class introduces students to classical and cultural artists, and by the time they graduate from 5th grade, they have studied over 46 different artists. Our music program offers a rich array of educational opportunities, blending cultural and spiritual music. Additionally, 4th and 5th grade students learn to read music through playing the bells. Students also enjoy daily PE, along with weekly library, counseling and STEM classes.

How does Montgomery Christian School stand out?

Montgomery Christian School offers an academically rigorous education for families with limited resources, with 100% of our students on scholarship. Our success is evident as many of our graduates are now thriving in universities and careers in fields such as radiology, finance, medicine, business, education and more. The MCS partnership is a unique asset to our community, as we collaborate with over 40 other non-profits to support the success of our families. At MCS, our core values are respect, honoring one another, and offering hope to families in the River Region, as well as building community with our generous sponsors and partners. We embrace diversity, with students representing a variety of cultures and economic backgrounds. As one parent shared, “Because of the incredible opportunity my son had at Montgomery Christian School, he is not only excelling academically as a junior at Auburn University, but he has also become a remarkable adult making decisions that make us all proud.”
