Deputy Commissioner Sandra Lucas leads the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA) with a commitment to ensuring veterans and their families receive the benefits, care, and recognition they have earned, while anticipating future needs. ADVA’s work reflects respect for Alabama’s veterans and a focus on honoring their sacrifices.
THE RESOURCES THAT KEEP US MOVING FORWARD ARE: The ideas and energy of each member of the ADVA team. We have one mission: to assist our veterans and their families in obtaining all the benefits they have earned.
WE CELEBRATE OUR WINS WHEN: Veterans and their families receive the care and benefits to which they are entitled. Although many at ADVA are veterans, it is an honor to continue serving. You could say every day is a win.
OUR CLIENTS TELL US THEY APPRECIATE: Our professionalism, compassion and tenacity. We refuse to give up. When a veteran or their family member needs assistance, we are willing to explore every resource to find a solution.
ONE THING PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT US IS: We are a State Agency, and not the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. We work closely with the USDVA and can help navigate the VA systems, but we do not provide health care.
THE VALUES THAT GUIDE EVERYTHING WE DO ARE: We hold ourselves personally and professionally accountable to deliver on America’s promises to all veterans through courage, conviction and a belief in our core values: Professionalism, Integrity, Compassion, Commitment and Teamwork.
THIS YEAR, WE’RE EXCITED FOR: The possibility of opening a new cemetery in North Alabama, the reopening of Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins home in Enterprise, a women veteran’s coordinator, Alabama Veterans Resource Center and many other new initiatives.
WE HOPE WOMEN VETERANS WILL: Use their voices to identify themselves as veterans. They are doing amazing things throughout Alabama; we need to acknowledge their accomplishments. If you are a female veteran reading this and are not enrolled in VA Healthcare, or have never investigated your benefits, this is your call-to-action!
