CEO Conversations: Gilbert Darrington

Helping take care of his ill grandmother growing up sparked Gilbert Darrington’s interest in a healthcare career. It also kindled a desire to serve.

He pursued both, becoming a nurse and serving in the U.S. Army. For the past eight years, he’s put skills honed in both roles to work as CEO of Health Services, Inc., where his primary job is managing the healthcare system as it offers a comprehensive range of affordable medical and wellness services for families and individuals in Central Alabama.

“I like to say I work for the employees and patients of HSI,” Gilbert Darrington said. “I ensure the staff is valued and has everything they need to provide patients with the quality health care they deserve.” This work is continually rewarding for the Montgomery native and doing it at home only adds to his satisfaction.

Why is HSI an important part of the healthcare offerings in our area?

The services provided at HSI are geared for the underserved population, those who are in need of the quality health care we provide. Health Services, Inc. is an organization that focuses on eliminating barriers of access to care.

What\’s the No.1 challenge HSI faced last year, and how did you and your team overcome it?

Staffing is a challenge we continuously work through. I wouldn’t say we have overcome it, but we continue to strategize new initiatives to recruit and retain staff members at every level of our organization.

What\’s the most fulfilling aspect of your work?

There is no better feeling than knowing I assisted someone in this community that had a need for one of our services. Whether they have had problems with their blood pressure, had a tooth pain or were in need of eyeglasses, that patient was able to come to HSI and leave taken care of. As someone who was born and raised in Montgomery, I take pride in being able to come home and give back.

What was your first job?

I worked in my parents’ grocery store, Darrington’s Groceries on Day Street in West Montgomery.

What\’s the best piece of business advice you\’ve ever gotten?

Always be prepared for your next opportunity. You never know when the next door for you to walk through will open.

What\’s the top tip you\’d give someone just starting their career?

Your passion will make room for you, so give it your all. You will be surprised by how far it will take you.

Personal Matters

If you had another job:

I spent 20 years in the military serving my country, so I believe I would be enjoying my retirement. But I know I still have work to do.

Must-have desk stash:

My eyeglasses and blue gel pens. Those two items must be within arm’s reach at all times.

Favorite quote:

“You can catch more bees with honey than with vinegar.” So always treat people with kindness and respect.

Out of office:

I should say I try to rest, but that wouldn’t be exactly true. But I do enjoy quality time with my grandchildren. Watching them grow up is a joy!
