Montgomery County Sheriff Derrick Cunningham honored as 2026 National Sheriff of the Year

Montgomery, AL — The Alabama Sheriff’s Association proudly announces that Montgomery County Sheriff Derrick Cunningham has been named the 2026 National Sheriff of the Year by the National Sheriffs’ Association, one of the most prestigious honors in American law enforcement.

Selected from more than 3,000 sheriffs nationwide, the award recognizes exceptional leadership, professionalism, and dedication to community service. Sheriff Cunningham has earned distinction for his lasting impact on the Montgomery community through innovative safety initiatives and active public engagement.

A committed public servant, Sheriff Cunningham is a graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy Class 231 and served 24 years in the Alabama National Guard. He made history in January 2015 as Montgomery County’s 39th sheriff and first Black sheriff, bringing decades of experience and a vision for community-centered law enforcement.
