Montgomery, AL (October 24, 2025) — The YMCA of Greater Montgomery hosted a groundbreaking ceremony this morning to celebrate the start of a $2.5 million renovation project at the East YMCA, making a major investment in the health, wellness, and development of the community it serves.
With completion anticipated in Fall 2026, the upgraded facility will enhance wellness opportunities for all ages, expand youth programming, and create more inviting spaces for families to connect and grow together.
“This renovation represents more than just bricks and equipment — it’s about building opportunities for people to belong, grow, and thrive,” said AJ Hernandez, President & CEO of the YMCA of Greater Montgomery. “The East YMCA has been a cornerstone in this community for years, and these updates will ensure it continues to meet the evolving needs of our members and neighbors.”
The renovation includes several major improvements:
- A 3,000 sq. ft. wellness center featuring new strength and cardio equipment for adults, seniors, and families.
- A 1,500 sq. ft. group exercise studio to expand capacity for wellness classes that promote physical and mental health.
- A 1,000 sq. ft. Y-Town designed to immerse children in imaginative play centered on real-world careers and life skills.
- A 1,000 sq. ft. youth development and community room offering flexible space for tutoring, mentoring, teen events, family workshops, and intergenerational programming.
When completed, the project will not only. Modernize the East YMCA but also strengthen the Y’s capacity to deliver on its mission — to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
“We are grateful to community partners, donors, and members whose ongoing support makes projects like this possible,” concluded Hernandez.
