Woman to Watch: Jeri Groce

“There will be moments when it feels like you’re burning the candle at both ends, but persistence pays off. You won’t be able to be everything to everyone, and that’s okay. The key is to keep your eye on the end goal and trust that you’ll find your way.”

As a Member of Warren Averett, LLC’s Audit Division, Jeri Groce has built a career defined by expertise, purpose and impact. Inspired during her college years by professional women who balanced both career and family, she was drawn to the intellectual challenge and structured career path of public accounting. Becoming a CPA proved to be a natural fit for her driven, detail-oriented personality, and today she is recognized as a leader in her field and a trusted advisor to organizations that make a difference in the community.

Top Tip: Stay the course. I’ve been with the same firm for 20 years, and while juggling priorities—whatever they may be for you—can feel overwhelming at times, it’s worth it.

ON THE JOB

I am a partner at Warren Averett, LLC. I am in the Audit and Attest group, specializing in the public sector industry. My client base is primarily not for profits, higher education and municipalities. I manage/oversee financial statement and compliance audits for our clients. I really enjoy working with organizations that make a meaningful impact in our community.

HELPING HAND

Giving back to the community is something I truly value. I am serving or have served on multiple boards including Family Sunshine Center, AL Hands & Voices, River Region Trails, St. James School, Panier Society, Squires, and Committee for the Future—Children’s Hospital. These roles have allowed me to support causes I care deeply about—from education and advocacy to public health and community development.

PERSONAL BEST

One of the accomplishments I’m most proud of is achieving the goal I set back in college—to build a successful career while also having a family. I made Partner at my firm, which was a major milestone professionally, and I’m married to my best friend. Together, we’re raising two amazing boys. It’s incredibly fulfilling to have reached that balance I aspired to early on.

INFLUENTIAL FIGURES

I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have a strong support system of family, friends and mentors throughout my career. Having loved ones nearby who could help with school pickups and sports practices gave me the flexibility to focus on work when I needed to. At the same time, I’ve had mentors who believed in me, challenged me to grow and encouraged me to pursue leadership opportunities—while also reminding me to step away for the important moments like class parties, school plays and games. That balance has made all the difference.

FUTURE-FOCUSED

I hope to continue to gain more not-for-profit clients; that is where my heart is. I love to help an organization get its “numbers” right so to speak. Also, my boys are growing up too fast, so I want to cherish my moments and make lasting memories with them!

FULFILLED

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my work is partnering with nonprofit organizations. These groups work tirelessly to make a difference and fill critical gaps in our communities. While we may ‘just be the auditors,’ I know that accurate financial reporting plays a key role in their ability to operate effectively and make informed decisions. Helping them get their financials right and streamline operations ultimately supports their mission—and being a part of that is incredibly rewarding.

OFF THE CLOCK

Outside of work, I’m incredibly grateful to have my family close by—my parents, in-laws, sister and her husband and sweet baby girl all live here, which is such a blessing. Their support means everything. I also have a wonderful circle of friends with children around the same age as mine. We love spending time together, whether it’s casual get-togethers or family trips. That sense of community and connection really enriches my life.
