Women to Watch: Liz Filmore

“The work we do on behalf of the people of Alabama constantly keeps me motivated and inspired to work harder. Seeing an idea, policy or decision fully implemented and helping real people in our state is the reason I go to work every single day. “

Liz Filmore serves as Chief of Staff for Governor Kay Ivey, playing a crucial role in the leadership of Alabama’s state government. With over 12 years of experience in Alabama’s public sector, Filmore oversees operations for 23 state cabinet-level agencies and manages the Governor’s Office staff, guiding the implementation and communication of the Governor’s priorities across the state. She leads the administration’s efforts to serve Alabama’s five million residents, ensuring Governor Ivey’s vision is upheld in daily decisions and policies. A two-time graduate of Troy University, with a degree in broadcast journalism and a master’s in public administration, Filmore first connected with Governor Ivey through Alabama Girls State and later joined her team, working on her re-election campaign for Lieutenant Governor. In her three years as Chief of Staff, she has led with dedication to advancing Alabama’s progress.

Helping Hand: I have committed this season in my life to serve with Governor Ivey. I work to find ways every day to help communities across Alabama. It is also my sincere desire that everyone on my team feels empowered to give their best work and truly feel appreciated.

Point of Pride: I am proud to be the first woman to serve as Chief of Staff to any Alabama governor in the over 200-year history as a state. I hope that I have laid the groundwork for women to be considered in the future and follow in my footsteps. It is a responsibility that I do not take lightly.

Influential Figures: In my professional career, I give credit to Barbara Patterson who led the Office of Student Involvement at Troy University. We shared an office while I was pursing my master’s degree. Her work ethic and insight in managing people are qualities that remain with me today. I also give credit to former Congressman Jo Bonner and Steve Pelham. Both previously served as Chief of Staff to Governor Ivey and instilled confidence in my work by watching their examples. I am also eternally grateful for my parents and grandparents who have always supported me throughout my life.

Fulfilled: Each day provides new opportunities to truly make a difference. The work we do on behalf of the people of Alabama constantly keeps me motivated and inspired to work harder. Seeing an idea, policy or decision fully implemented and helping real people in our state is the reason I go to work every single day.

Firm Foundation: I am very blessed to serve with Governor Ivey and lead her team during this specific time. There is an end date set to this experience and that keeps me grounded and reminded to work hard, treat people fairly and always be responsive. I work hard every day and trust that God has big plans for my next opportunity.

Out of Office: As a mother to a young child, my time spent out of the office is making memories with my family.
